The development of the relationship between Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby throughout the novel

From my point of view one of the most astonishing aspects of the novel is the change of the relationship between the two main characters Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby. In the beginning of the novel Nick is merely aware of the fact that Mr Gatsby is a handsome and wealthy young man, who lives in the mansion next door. Nick admires Mr Gatsby for what he is, for the extravagant festivities he celebrates in his mansion and he is has the urge to meet him. After having become acquainted with one another Nick soon notices that Mr Gatsby has everything he yearns for: a huge amount of popularity, enough money to celebrate festivities for the uncountable number of invited and uninvited friends and acquaintances. It can be said that even though Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway are nearly of the same age and have both served in the national service, Nick regards Jay Gatsby as his role model. It is interesting to see that the relationship between the two characters abruptly changes, when it becomes clear how deep Jay Gatsby's love to his long lasted lover Daisy is. Suddenly the situation changes and Nick appears to be the facilitator between Gatsby and Daisy. He acts as Gatsby's guide and helper and it appears to me that Gatsby becomes dependent on Nick's aid and advice. As the plot proceeds and all unfortunate circumstances lead to Gatsby's death, it is Nick Carraway who makes all the effort of contacting and inviting friends to Jay Gatsby's funeral. In the end not even half a dozen attend the desolate occasion and it becomes obvious that even though the relationship between Nick and Jay Gatsby was marked by highs and lows, they were able to create a true friendship.
